A doll’s house
Autumn 2023: Ibsen’s classic uniquely adapted to Swedish sign language.
A Doll’s House is one of Ibsen’s most read and staged dramas, at least as relevant today as when it was written in 1879. The play takes place in a well-to-do home, where the beautiful Nora plays the role of perfect wife and mother. Nora is married to bank director Torvald and she is his little butterfly, a happily fluttering beauty inside the safe walls of the home. Of course, Nora is happy, you can see it in the family photos where she is beaming? Also, Torvald’s upcoming promotion will bring them a fortune. Outwardly, they live a perfect life in a perfect home. But when a dark secret threatens to be revealed, everything Nora tries to uphold is challenged.
Sometimes Nora’s inner beliefs and expectations have collided with the realities of the outside world. In order to deal with things, Nora has been forced to spin a web of lies because of the woman’s place and role in society. But how much is Nora willing to sacrifice for her marriage and maintain the polished facade?
A Doll’s House is about marriage, and above all the woman’s role in this. An important play about gender equality and women’s liberation. A drama about the images we love to create and the images that ensnare us – now uniquely adapted to Swedish sign language.
Performed in Swedish sign language and with Swedish speech integrated on stage.
